At my family holiday gatherings, I always sign up to make a dessert. I have a sweet tooth and I want to be able to enjoy a treat that lacks processed sugar and dairy products.
White processed sugar has empty calories and there are many other sweeteners that contain minerals and vitamins that you can use. Some of my favorites are dates, honey, and maple syrup.
In addition to natural sweeteners, this recipe also contains healthy fats from coconut oil and cacao butter.
Cacao butter is the fat of the cacao bean (where chocolate comes from). The fat is separated from the bean,...
Painful cramping? Bloating? Headaches?⌠before your menstruation comes?
Have you been to the doctor to address your terrible PMS and the solution was to go on the pill?
What if I told you there was a way to balance your hormones naturally, without having to take synthetic hormones?
I understand your pain, literally!- because I used to experience ânormalâ menstrual pain each month until I learned how nutrition and meditation could help!
In this video, I address one of the major root causes in hormone imbalances that can create these symptoms. This has to do with the hormonal ratio of progesterone and estrogen levels.
Watch the video HERE.
Most often, when my menstruation now comes, I feel my cervix opening to release the endometrium lining. It feels like gentle swelling, rather than sharp pains that used to have me lying in bed with a heating pad. I may feel some emotions arise before my moontime comes- and I explain in this video why this is natural. I also share a meditation for...
Stress. Deadlines. Busy Schedule.
Our brains as women biologically function different than men. A manâs brain generally functions with more focus on one task at hand. Typically, the higher estrogen levels women have can make our brains look like computers with many tabs open, where we are able to jump from task to task, and work on several projects simultaneously. It gives us a unique ability to see the big picture and operate from many details, in knowing that everything is intrinsically connected. Itâs why the men in our lives tell us to âget to the pointâ when weâre telling long drawn out stories, and our girlfriends hang onto every word. All that extra clutter of emotion and detail when telling a story can be quite confusing to our male friends, but our sister-friends catch every beat, waiting for it all to tie together.
But the catch 22 of our incredible female brains is the world we live in is set up in a patriarchal, masculine based model, where rigid work schedules allow litt...
Hormone Balancing Supplements⌠Menstrual Health Superfoods⌠Acupuncture & MassagesâŚ
These are all great tools for balancing hormones, however they all cost money.
If you are looking for what you can do, right now, without having to spend a penny, I will share with you a little ancient medicinal knowledge I learned from native friends I recently met in Costa Rica.
I write this while sitting within the lush jungles of Puerto Viejo,  between classes I am teaching at Passion Yoga Schoolâs teacher training program. While I sit here, I can hear the waves roaring and crashing onto the beaches in the distance.
Last evening, I met a man who told me about the women in his town outside of San Jose and how they gather together in Red Tents to honor their menstrual cycles. He asked me how to balance hormones through food and after I answered, I asked him how the women in this culture balance their hormones.
What he told me was beautiful. He said, âwhen women have a disconnect with their cycle,...
Around the time of Menopause or âMoonpause,â we go through changes in our hormones that may remind us of almost a second puberty. At this time, we may also go through changes in our roles as caregivers. Â Perhaps our children are grown and we no longer need to provide the same involved care. Moonpause is a beautiful gift of womanhood. It is the transition to embracing the changes for the next half of life, by turning inward to care for ourselves and nurturing our dreams that may have been set aside during our motherhood years.
During perimenopause, we generally start to see pauses in our moon cycle, where we might not have a bleed for several months. Eventually a whole year goes by after our last bleed, and we will now have transitioned into Moonpause- the final pause of our moon cycle. This final pause means we no longer release an egg, thus our bodies stop producing the high levels of estrogen we experienced during our menstrual years. Est...
Now estrogen isnât so bad, it gives us our curvy hips and breasts, and itâs the cause of our voluptuous femininity. We need enough estrogen to ovulate, as it is helping build the tissues in our uterus to create a home for the fertilized egg, as well as helping the pre-fertilized egg grow and mature to burst through the follicle.
So how does excess estrogen, from Xenoestrogens or poor detoxification, affect our body?
With excess estrogen, our body may be building up too much uterine lining, causing very heavy menstrual periods or even Endometriosis, Fibroids, or PCOS.
Also, if we are under a lot of stress and our diet has been filled with more meals consisting of processed foods, our liver may be having difficulty performing all of its cleaning up and filtering functions such as breaking down excess hormones.
During the Follicular and Ovulatory phases of the female monthly cycle, estrogen is rising and is at the highest peak of your cycle. After ovulation occurs, it is time for prog...
Many women in todayâs culture are experiencing excess estrogen. Why? Because it is literally everywhereâŚ. in our plastic water bottles, our shampoos, mascara, beauty products, clothing, receipts, food storage containers⌠the list is long. How is estrogen, a hormone produced by our ovaries and fat cells, in these products? Well, it is not actually estrogen, but Xenoestrogen, a chemical that mimics what our body thinks is estrogen. These Xenoestrogens are absorbed into the body through our skin cells when we use these products or through food and drinks. Because our body is tricked into thinking we have more estrogen, we experience an overflow. And this excess estrogen does not produce pretty symptoms. These Xenoestrogen chemicals are hard to metabolize and break down, and can be stored in our bodyâs fat cells for years⌠even decades.
Are you feeling more tired lately? A desire to nest and relax in the comforts of your home?
You might want to glance outside in the evening and see if you can see the moon.
It could in fact be the dark moon, (new moon). The moon is closest to the earth during the new and full moons. It changes itâs relation to earth through a 29.5 day cycle during its revolution around the earth, creating a gravitational pull that is strongest when itâs closest (new and full).
In ancient aboriginal and agricultural community times, tribes were in harmony with the changing phases of the moon. They used it as their source of light at night (we are all too familiar with the bright glow of a full moon and how it lights up the nightâs sky). And when the moon was dark, they naturally rested more, as it would have been dangerous to be out at night without much light as they would have been more susceptible to predators.
Furthermore, a person may naturally produces less melatonin, a sleep hormone, when the...
Many of you have probably heard the term âpranaâ if you go to yoga. Prana is taught in our Western culture to mean âbreath.â But in the ancient Indian language, Sanskrit, one of the oldest languages in world dating back to 1,500 B.C., prana translates to âlife-force.â
During my training at The Tree of Life Rejuvenation Center with Dr. Gabriel Cousens, we studied how eating a diet rich with live foods, also known as raw foods, provided life-force energy and affected our energy levels. After 3 months, I experienced an abundance of energy, as my cells were vibrating with life-force and in return, I felt joy and spirited.
Cousens said âthe green of our garden, the algae in our water, the trees, grasses and herbs on our lands are the transforming agents that harvest the sunâs light via the process of photosynthesis. When we consume these foods, this stored sun energy is released into our bodies as electrons; it is then transformed into ATP, adenosine triphosphate, the biological energy ne...
